As we begin Black History Month, we gather to give thanks and to reflect on the stories and contributions of Black communities across the United Kingdom. This month gives us an opportunity to celebrate the richness of Black heritage and culture and also to listen to the experiences of those whose stories have too often been unheard. For the Church, Black History Month invites us to recognise the many ways Black Christians and communities have shaped the life of the Church and the wider society.
It is a time to celebrate the resilience and contributions of generations before us, while also reflecting honestly on the experiences of prejudice and exclusion that have shaped their stories. As Christians, our remembrance is rooted in the conviction that every person is created in the image of God, and that reconciliation is central to our calling. So, as we enter this month together, let us bring before God our prayers for the Church and our communities we are called to help build.
Dear Lord,
We come before You as this month begins, with hearts open and heads bowed in gratitude. You are the God who delights in the diversity of Your creation, and who calls each one of us by name.
We thank You for the rich heritage and resilience of Black communities across the United Kingdom, for the generations who built lives, families, and churches here. Often against the weight of prejudice and exclusion, yet still trusted in Your goodness even in the hardest of seasons.
Lord, we thank You for the parents who prayed for their children through hostility they should never have had to face; for the elders who carried faith across oceans and planted it firmly in new soil, letting it take root and flourish.
We Thank You
We thank You for their wisdom, their courage, and their contribution to this nation’s story.
We thank You, for the gifts that flow from these communities: for music that lifts the weary, for preaching that stirs the soul, for hospitality that welcomes the stranger.
We thank You for lives lived faithfully in the ordinary and extraordinary alike, often unseen by history but never ignored by You.
Lord, we confess that history has too often silenced voices that deserved to be heard. Forgive us for the ways the Church has stayed quiet where it should have spoken out. For choosing comfort over conviction, please forgive us for the times we have offered easy platitudes instead of honest lamenting.
As this month unfolds, give us eyes that truly see and ears that truly hear. Give us the humility to learn from stories that will be told and the wisdom to hold them with reverence. Teach us to listen longer than feels comfortable and to sit with truths that unsettle us.
We Pray For
We pray for justice, the justice that flows from Your righteousness, rooted in mercy and truth.
We pray for peace, the peace that comes only after truth is spoken and heard.
We pray for unity that celebrates our diversity, the way Heaven itself will be filled with every nation and every people, worshipping together before Your throne.
Let that vision of Heaven shape how we live together here, now on earth. Bless our churches, our schools, our families, and our leaders with courage to pursue and strive for an equitable society. Lord, please raise voices up that will speak boldly for what is right and soften hearts that have grown hardened.
May this month be more than just a season of remembrance, may it be a spark that lights a fire of lasting change in our hearts and our churches. Let the stories we hear this month move us to action long after it ends, so that what begins as reflection becomes transformation.
Amen.
