My Year with the Tribe

Sunday 15 April

Writer Will Millard lives with the treehouse-dwelling Korowai tribe in Papua, Indonesia, to understand the pressures they face in adapting to a modern world they have only come into contact with in the past 40 years. 

The Story of the Jews

Tuesday 17 April

BBC Four, 9.00pm

Simon Schama explores the impact of Jews on European arts and culture in the Enlightenment era. He also investigates the controversial 1894 trial of French army officer Alfred Dreyfus, which led Austro-Hungarian journalist Theodor Herzl to claim that, without a homeland of their own, the Jewish people would never be free from persecution.

My Turban and Me

Tuesday 17 April

Actor and comedian Sanjeev Kohli explores the importance of wearing the Sikh turban in modern Britain and why it is becoming more popular. He starts by looking into his own family history, and questions whether he was right to make the decision not to wear the turban at the age of 14.

Michael Palin and Jane Milligan celebrate the comedy writer and performer’s centenary by presenting the first broadcast of archive interviews that uniquely capture Spike Milligan’s perspective on his life and career.

Taking it to the streets

 

Grahame Snelling, Safeguarding Officer for the London District of the Methodist Church, has written a blog post on the recent spike in serious youth violence that has resulted in a number of fatal stabbings. The blog also features a radio interview with the Revd Nigel Cowgill on the Government’s new plans to reduce violent crime. You can read the blog and listen to the interview here.

Worship photos needed
  

We are looking for photos of acts of worship from your local church or community for our window at Methodist Church House. Help us show those who walk and drive past our offices what worship looks like. Please send your photos to strachans@methodistchurch.org.uk and remember to ask permission from those included in anything you send in.

Methodist Studies seminar

 

The programme for the seminar at the John Rylands Library in Manchester (organised by the MWRC and Cliff College) on Friday 20 April is available here. To register your free place and for dietary requirements, please email Helen Stocker.

Resourcing Mission Forum  

   

The annual Forum will take place from Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 May at King’s Park Conference Centre, Northampton. We would like to invite you and your key Circuit and District Officers (Grants, Property and Treasurers) to join us for this event. Book your place here, the password is rmf2018.

The Big Church Day Out
  

This is the UK’s largest annual gathering of the wider church that creates a space for all denominations and ages to gather for worship and celebration. The events take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May in West Sussex and Friday 1 and Saturday 2 June in Cheshire.

ONE Interns needed

  

This is a creative, hands-on and innovative opportunity for 21-26 year olds, to experience a year of exploring their faith alongside a paid placement in professional organisations across a variety of sectors. The closing date is Friday 27 April. Click here to find out more and apply.

Reflections

In the coming week, the Prayer Handbook will be encouraging us to pray with Christians in the Caribbean and the Americas, Britain and Ireland. The theme for next week’s A Word in Time Bible studies is Alive in Christ, written by Mike King, a former Vice-President of the Conference.
