Walk to Conference

President Designate of the Methodist Conference, and Deputy Chair of Yorkshire West District, the Revd Dr Barbara Glasson, is currently walking 133 miles to Methodist Conference. You can follow her and the group’s progress here. The group are fundraising for All We Can.Those attending Conference are invited to welcome the walkers at around 12pm on Saturday 29 June.

Action for Children – 150th anniversary

In July, Action for Children will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Action for Children would like to visit as many churches as possible to thank supporters and celebrate this milestone with them. If you are planning a special all-age service, you can find worship resources and information on how to invite a speaker here. Action for Children Sunday is marked every year on the second Sunday in July; this year it is on 14 July.

Conference: A Bright Succession

This conference entitled ‘A Bright Succession’, referencing the hymn sung at Methodist ordinations, will explore the legacy of Susanna Wesley. It will touch on a range of issues linking gender, heritage and faith. ‘A Bright Succession’ takes place from 12 – 14 July at the University of Lincoln. Guest speakers include Professor Charles Wallace and the Revd Dr Barbara Glasson. To book your place please visit the Methodist Church website.

Volunteer at 3Generate

3Generate are looking for volunteers to help run their annual weekend event in 2019 which takes place at Pontins, Southport between 22 – 24 November. All volunteers should apply here. Methodist Schools fringe events

Methodist Schools are hosting ‘In Conversation: Onjali Rauf and the Revd Michaela Youngson’ on 29 June at Hilton Metropole, Birmingham. Former President of Conference, the Revd Michaela Youngson talks with author Onjali Rauf, winner of the 2019 Blue Peter Children’s Book of the Year, and shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize, The Boy at the Back of the Class which explores the refugee crisis from a child’s perspective. Action for Children Sunday fringe event

Conference and Action for Children will be at the Conference and their Head of Policy will lead the fringe event ‘Changing childhoods: how can we address the challenges facing children today?’ on 2 July in the Hampton Room, Hilton Birmingham Metropole. They will be sharing some of their findings from research they commissioned into childhood. Book here.

Scripture and Contemplative Spirituality

The Centre for Applied Carmelite Spirituality is hosting a conference on Scripture and Contemplative Spirituality from 12 – 14 July at the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford. Dr Susan Muto and Dr Margaret Barker will be speaking. This will be followed by workshops and sessions on this theme. For more information see their website.

American Memorial Chapel Travel Grant

The American Memorial Chapel Travel Grant offers ministers the opportunity to visit the USA with the aim of fostering understanding and the exchange of ideas. Applications are now open for 2020. Please contact The Queen’s Foundation for an application form by email: a.parmar@queens.ac.uk.

Summer Fair

A summer fair in aid of Methodist Women in Britain, London District Project Charities, Mercy Ships, Rafiki Foundation and Save Children in Africa in Need takes place on 22 June, 11am – 2pm at Forest Hill Methodist Church & Centre, London. 20% of funds collected will go to the World Mission of the Methodist Church. There will be raffles, stalls, lunch and afternoon tea. For more information email admin@foresthillmethodistchurch.org.

Reflections

In the coming week, the 2018/2019 Methodist Prayer Handbook, ‘A World Transformed, encourages us to pray with Christians in Europe and the Pacific, as well as Britain and Ireland. The theme for next week’s A Word in Time Bible studies is ‘Spirit Led’. Order your Prayer Handbook here.
